Whys And Wherefores
12/6/2007 6:07:48 PM

In the movie Lord Of The Rings, there is a battle scene where countless warriors lift their bows with arrows loaded. At the voice of the commanding officer the arrows are released. The sheer volume and speed with which the arrows are propelled is so vast and swift, that the commander’s hair is blown across his face. The battle had begun.

Does that sound like a scene from your life? So many arrows flying that the sheer volume and speed creates a whirlwind that leaves you spinning? If so, you are not alone.

Several years ago, I experienced a particularly dark time in my life where a barrage of arrows seemed to be on a round-the-clock schedule. As I struggled through each issue that arose, I took the typical steps of praying for guidance, direction, strength and assurance that my actions were in accordance with God’s will. All would look well, and then another situation would arise. Then another. Then another. Hence the barrage of arrows.

I found myself saying to the Lord again and again, “Lord, I just don’t understand.” I made that statement so often to the Lord, I became weary of saying it, but I was at a loss for any other words and I was growing tired.

Then one day, I was on my way back to work after dealing with yet another arrow and I said for one last time, “Lord, I just don’t understand.” In all the months I had made that statement, I wasn’t fully prepared for God’s response. He said to me, “I didn’t ask you to understand. I asked you to trust me.”

It was then that I realized I was not always going to know the “whys” and “wherefores” of what God is doing in my life. I will not always get the answer I thought I would. I will not always get an answer in the timeframe that I want. And I will not always get advanced notice that an arrow is headed my way.

I do know, however, that God is always faithful. I do know that Christ has my best interest in mind. I do know that the Holy Spirit will always lead me to truth. And I do know that I can fully trust Almighty God for there is no one greater.
