Every now and again, I am reminded of my pre-Jesus days. As a little girl, I thought God was an elderly man with long white hair and a rigid white beard, who sat on a huge throne with a staff in hand just waiting to say, “Ah-ha….caught-cha!”
I imagined at each “ah-ha”, he would put a mark on a huge chalkboard; keeping score of everything I ever did wrong. In my teen and early adult years, I wavered back and forth in my understanding of who God was because I still viewed him as being cold and distant from humanity.
But when I came to understand the simple message of the cross; when I finally got it, I realized how far off I had been in my imagination of who God truly is. Not to say that I know all there is to know about God by any means, but I finally realized that the God I had deemed as distant and indifferent actually desired to be up close and personal.
I discovered that the same God who created all things and holds them together, is the same God who orchestrated the very time and place I would breathe my first breath. The same God who has eternity past and eternity future in his grip, is the same God who willingly shed his blood to cover my sin. And the same God who knows all, is all present and is all powerful, is the same God who knows me by name.
