Many roads may lead to Rome, but only one road leads to the cross.
In Genesis 3:22-24 Adam and Eve are driven out of the Garden of Eden as a result of their sin. Once they are driven out, verse 24 notes that God placed cherubim and a flashing sword on the east side of the Garden in order to guard the way to the tree of life.
Years ago when I read over these verses, I noted something peculiar. If there was an east side, there must have been a west side. If there was a west side, there must have been a north and a south side – right? It seems like a reasonable assumption. So, why then did God only place a guard on the east side of the Garden? What about the other sides? Remember, Adam and Eve were “driven” out. They were not exactly jumping for joy to leave the environment of paradise and God obviously wanted to make sure they didn’t sneak back in.
So why only guard the east side of the Garden? Well, there was no need to guard any other side, because there was only one way to the tree of life – which is Jesus Christ. What an incredible foreshadow of Christ’s redemptive work on the cross. Regardless of the number of sides, there was ultimately only one way to the tree that offered eternal life. And as Scripture reveals, that is a truth that still stands today.
Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6).
