In an ever changing world - one thing remains unchangeable. After 15 years of using the same Bible, I decided a few weeks ago to order a new one. Sure, there were many times before that I considered getting a new one; especially after my dog eat a couple of pages and gnawed some of the corners of my old one. But I have had this Bible for so long, it seemed silly to get a new one. Besides, it already had all of my notes and highlights in it. But, regardless of the excuses I came up with, it was time for a new Bible.
With great anticipation of its arrival, each day that I went to the mailbox, I would open the box hoping my new Bible would be inside. Well, yesterday it finally arrived. With its crisp new pages, unmarked by years of study, a fresh copy of God’s Word was delivered.
While anticipating the arrival of my new Bible, I picked up the old one I had been using all these years. Flipping through the pages, I saw note after note; highlight after highlight. Some of the notes resulted from a discovery during a particular study. Some of the notes were made as a result of a difficult time in life. And some were made just as a reminder that a particular verse grabbed my attention in a special way.
When my new Bible arrived, I browsed the pages, looked over the maps, and read some of the commentary. It was odd seeing pages without any marks or highlights. At first I thought I would take the time to copy my notes and highlights from the old book to the new one. But as I thought about it, it seemed as if I would be missing out on something. Then I realized I would be missing out on rediscovering God’s Word from where I am in life - right now. I wanted to experience Scripture from where God has me at this moment in time, and not from years past.
You see, God’s Word is relevant to my life today even though the world and its culture are constantly changing around me. Each time Scripture is read and studied, new revelation and deeper understanding occurs. Not that God’s Word changes. Not that the meaning or purpose changes, but because I change; my focus, my understanding and my willingness to be shaped - changes. As I move through life, experience new things, and encounter new challenges; I change. Fifteen years have passed since I had a new Bible. My relationships have changed, my family has changed, my career has changed, my capabilities have changed, my aspirations have changed and my focus has changed. But one thing has remained constant and unchangeable and that’s God’s Word. His Word has and will continue to remain the same; full of purpose, full of wisdom and full of truth in an ever changing world.
