What? A Blessing? 4/6/2008 9:32:52 AM
Are you shocked and surprised when God blesses you? I’m reminded of a trip I took a while back, through several neighboring cities in my area. My mission? To simply bless someone I didn’t know. So, inspired by the Holy Spirit, I decided I would deliver gifts to women’s ministry directors at a variety of local churches. Sounds simply enough. But what I encountered was rather interesting.
At each church where I dropped off a gift, all but one of the recipients gave an unexpected response. Each one questioned why I was giving a gift to a total stranger for no apparent reason. They wanted to know what the gift was for and what they had done to warrant receiving it. A couple of them were even hesitant to accept the gift. And each time, I had to explain that I just wanted to do something nice for them. “Just because”, I said, as they looked at me like I was nuts.
In essence, instead of saying, “What a blessing!” they were saying, “What? A blessing?” After each delivery, I kept thinking to myself, “Why are they so shocked and surprised?”
Of all the people I encountered that day, only one responded with a simple, “Thank you, how nice.” They were not shocked; but rather, pleasantly surprised and willing to accept the gift.
As I drove home at the end of that day, I couldn’t help but question if I too respond with “why” when the Lord blesses me. Am I taken by surprise when he gives me a gift? Am I hesitant to accept it? Or do I simply say, “Thank you, Lord”.
