A few weeks back I had the opportunity to talk to a women’s Bible study group. My topic was entitled “What Are You Waiting For?”
I was given about six months to prepare for the talk and during that time, I took the outline I already had and added several pages of notes. As the date of the talk grew closer, and as I prayed about what direction God wanted me to go with the topic of What Are You Waiting For?, he continually reminded me of a precept he taught me a long time ago. That is, to be flexible so God can do his work in and through my life. You see, I learned from past experience that I needed (and wanted) to stay clear of getting in the way and doing things with my effort, with my knowledge, and with my strength. When I start to drift in the direction of Me, Me, Me, I’ve also learned to stop and ask myself whether I’m watching and listening for his insight and direction or whether I have distracted myself with…myself. Usually the latter is true.
When I take living my Christian life into my own hands I am guaranteed one thing - that I will be exhausted. Exhausted from expending my own energy to do and be all that God has designed me to do and be. Scripture after Scripture reminds us that it is by his strength and his power and his might and his wisdom that we accomplish all that he has designed us to do and be. Not the other way around.
When we need strength to get through a tough situation, God doesn’t hand us a bag of strength and say, “Instructions are in the bag…Good Luck.” No, instead he is our strength. If the need is peace, he is our peace. If the need is wisdom, he is our wisdom and so on.
In Matthew 11:28-30 we read, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
