On my wake-up walk down a gravel driveway
she turned her head instantly to
stare with
wide and beautiful eyes
at the intruder at breakfast in our
overgrown spring garden
The adult doe realized that I was between her and
the woods of safety and
how to bolt and escape after
a decision not yet made
she remained still and staring
as I turned my body slowly away from hers
Her footsteps were quick as she shot past
just a few yards away
giving me a close-up view of her
bounding form graceful and beautiful
melting into
her world of speed while fading from humanity
Those special moments when man and animals of the wild share a brief communion are ones to be treasured in the heart forever. I remember one time coming across a moose in the wilderness and after we looked into each others eyes he just turned and sauntered off but I was awed forever.
