I just got back from a local open mike night, spouting odd poetry and short stories while a noise coffee machine did its thing. A pretty good audience at this particular spot. Even some students way in the back with their noses in their books. College was so long ago, but there was something simple about "learning stuff" and "preparing for life", when in reality there's really no way to prepare for all the baloney.
I've probably been invited to speak to some writing classes at a local college about the "writing life" etc -- how's that for turning things on their heads? I was no good in school. In any class, you can bet I'd be jotting down unrelated stuff or doing something else, often just playing frisbee and avoiding the whole affair. Maybe that's because each day was the same dull grind, and nobody interesting (a.k.a. nobody from the real world) ever stopped by to talk to us.
No money of course. If it's related to things I want to do, you can bet there's no money.
Though I did sell one chapbook tonight. No wait, I traded it for a piece of chocolate cake, which I later dropped on the way to the car.
It's nice to have a regular spot, to walk in and see some folks and know their names. There was a feeling that maybe we were a bit of color/sound/culture. People could come in and have a warm drink and soak up some words.
