When Pets Die 9/1/2006 9:16:34 PM
Ode to my little Siamese Ming. I can't handle death very well. It is hard enough when a relative or friend passes on. But there is something about the death of a pet that just grieves me immensely. On August 24th, a dear little Siamese cat, a feral I'd taken care of since her stray mama came dragging her to the back doorstep with sisters, Ling-Ling and Smokey, died of an unknown illness. I suspect she had feline leukemia. She was so thin and frail in spite of the many meals she had at my house. On Wednesday night, I couldn't find the little darling and I assumed she'd wandered off and passed. All day Thursday, the 24th, I looked for her high and low. It was such a hot day and I again assumed she left to go die somewhere in peace. I was so upset because I couldn't find her. Then that night, at 8:30 pm, I looked out only to find her frail little body lying as close to the rug I'd provided for her to lay on as well as the feeding bowl. I don't know how the little angel managed to walk another step. Dissolved into tears, I knew I had to wait until morning to bury her. So I rolled her gently up in that old rug and cried the rest of the night because she left me. The next morning about 6 am, I went out and dug a grave the best I could, the ground being so hard and lumpy. I hated to have to lower her in the hole. I hated to put dirty on top of her, her little tail still so soft but limp. I did the deed and cried more tears. Pets are so faithful. They are the best of friends. They don't care how ugly you are. They are with you to love you.
On September 2nd, a friend will now be gone two whole years. On September 4th, my nephew Bobby will be gone 24 long years. It never gets easier no matter how many years go by. The hurt and the pain is always there. I know it will be that way for those who lost loved ones on 9/11 too. They have my utmost sympathy.
