September is that Magic Wand
9/18/2008 3:16:18 AM

A month as colorful as Fantasia, the movie.
September means change. It always has and hopefully always will. Back to school, it signifies, even though most schools start in August anyway. When the children return to school, parents return to ironclad routines of taking turns dropping them off and going to extracurricular activities. We managed all that with three children. It was a circus that lasted for seventeen years.

Back then I could barely look up. My eyes were always on the clock or searching for spare change. Now I look around the house at their trophies, framed photos and artwork and even scratches, dents in the wall. It was as if an army moved through here.

September means change once again. We have gotten news that our son-in-law should be returning from Iraq in about two weeks. This will be his fourth time to return from the sandbox. September seems to be when things change for him and they have gotten word that in September of 2009, they will move near D.C. Hopefully no more sandbox.

My sons have seen change in September too. One is now working for a military contractor and hopes to go overseas with that crew. The other has gotten a great raise moving up to manager at a prosperous car wash business. I get free car washes when we are in town. They both began these new jobs this month. One is looking for a new place to live; the other just moved into a big, comfy house with his girlfriend.

September seems full of good karma. My youngest child was born in this month. My mother who passed away in July of last year was born on Sept. 30th. This will always be a month with good tags attached to it but one that goes out of sight with a whimper. She would have been 81.

Last year, I saw my entire landscape change. Newly retired, I spruced up most of this old house and wrote over 20 short stories and two volumes of poetry. I don't know where all that energy came from. Later, I began painting as my mother had done. Sketching and painting are now my passion along with marketing my book.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO HAZARD may be released by the end of September. The ninth month of the year could add another notch to its belt there. This is change I can believe in. September is that magic wand, that Fantasia, the movie. Once again I see things transformed.
