A Little Corny But.... 8/20/2008 4:20:54 AM
Reflections on a rural life.... Ten more bags of corn bright as the sun, line the top of the freezer. I think that puts us up to 27 bags of cut corn. We have almost 3 dozen bags of various green beans. The freezer looks as full as the Smithsonian. And I am cooking some of my homemade kraut with hot dogs. Kraut and weenies is what locals call that meal. I have trouble even saying the word WEENIES, unless I am calling a sorry person such a thing. A pan of buttermilk cornbread with that and we are in business. Corn does seem vital to us in this country. You almost should make every day Thanksgiving to acknowledge corn's place in our society. It is giving wheat a run for its money.
Yesterday I passed the insurance building and saw a guy dangling over the edge with a paint roller on a pole. They are repainting the side of this old brick landmark as the new bridge will be opened soon just next door to the place. The old words, STERLING HARDWARE, can barely be made out and will be gone by this afternoon. I hate to see old signs removed or covered up. They are windows into our past.
On another road is a small liquor store with a rusty sign out front. It says, WHISKEY DISPENSARY. How many dispensary signs do you see these days? I like the way that word sounds. Classy ring to it and I hope that sign remains for quite some time.
Lots of people collect old signs. We met a guy who has a barn full of them. In a small town, you notice such things. The guys hanging over the edge of that building are going to help patch our chimney soon and repair some old gutterwork. They may be hanging off the side of our metal roof. It should be a much easier job. I may offer them some corn.
