What A Wonderful Day 12/5/2011 2:13:59 PM
What A Wonderful Day
When I first arrived here in Portland, I heard one say that it is wonderful during the summer. And I wondered why. Now that I have been living here full-time for four years (going on my fifth), it is indeed wonderful. The sky is almost always blue. The surroundings are always green. Cars and buses are buzzing to and fro, from destination to destination. People are out and about in cafes and bars, talking and mingling. Shops are full. Everywhere you look, there are always activities. It is like the bears had awakened from hibernation, and suddenly they are foraging for food or simply playing.
I would just sit in my bar, right outside Greater Trumps and watch the world go by; this world meandering through life. I would wait for friends to appear and one by one, they do. There would be Bridget and Ryan, Kyle, Ted and Carol. Then Tim who appears day or night, you wouldn’t know, will show up. Gina will also be in the group. There is the Puff Daddies and the group of Russ and Cody (who smokes cigars and pipes.) The bar maids or man, whether it is Janice or Hope, or Coop efficiently will serve cold drinks to this awaiting crowds. And then, at night, here comes Mike, Mike and Stacy (which along with Bridget, Ryan and me make up Team Skunk); then Bryan will show up, normally to work at his computer. And not to forget Leslie and Dana, Joe and Jolie (with Jolie always talking with Hope, because they are best friends) and Anton and Debra will all appear and disappear. All them, plus some more are part of my wonderful experience in my small world.
Yes, indeed, summer is wonderful. But it is now late fall. Supposedly, the clouds have returned. The bright disposition of summer must have given way to fall. Tree branches lay waste and its leaves on the ground. But no, not today; for even though it’s frigidly cold, the sun is shining brightly, the sky is blue, cars and buses are buzzing and tonight, Greater Trumps will be filled with people who just wanted a quaff of beer…or so.
