Santa Claus 12/12/2011 2:16:20 PM
Santa Claus. He evokes a man who brings the Christmas spirit to all of us. To each and everyone, they hold a different meaning. But to a child, he brings forth toys and goodies that no one would bring except perhaps, parents. So, I ask Russ if he still believes in Santa Claus. He said, “Yes.” And do I believe in Santa Claus? In my child-like perspective, I do. He is fun and mysterious which only adults could know about. When I was a child, my father would coax me and my sister to sleep before midnight. Why midnight? Oh, I don’t know. It’s just that time when after midnight, the small hours of the day commence. He would be in his sleigh. It’s even in the newspaper. My father showed it to us, and we truly believe in him. He was shown flying the night skies with Rudolph at the head. And if we don’t sleep before midnight, the gifts and goodies would not at any rate materialize.
I don’t know if Taylor, my niece still believes in Santa Claus. But my sister and her older sister had kept the secret to themselves. To Taylor, Santa is true. She would prepare milk and eggs before she would go to sleep, by the fireplace. Of course, sleeping in the living room where the fireplace is, I would, before the morning arrived, bite at the cookies and drink the milk. So by the time, she runs down the stairs, all is good order. Santa was at their home and the goodies are there. There were no high gadget items. It was fruits, pencils, papers and all the simple stuffs a child might like. I was told that you cannot ask Santa for things. You may wish it but it’s up to Santa whatever he brings. Until Taylor got older, she still believes in Santa.
I have my doubts when I was grade four. I along with my friends had a serious discussion about Santa Claus. One said that he spied but no one came. I counter it that he was not sleeping that is why Santa did not appear. All sorts of arguments ensued and from then on, I had my doubts; but I still believe in Santa Claus…until, one Christmas, when mom and dad was in the States and I was deposited at my grandparents house, I ask for fifty pesos. I stuck the note into my stockings and went to sleep for the night. It was not whether I get the fifty pesos or not. Rather, if I get the fifty pesos then Santa exists. If not, Santa does not exist. The next morning, to my amazement, there was no fifty pesos. And then I began to believe that Santa did not exist; that it was my Papa (grandfather) Eriong who would play Santa but he did not chose to.
Perhaps, it was the asking for a specific item (fifty pesos) that prevented him to come. After all, the rule is not to ask. Perhaps, I realize that I am too naïve to believe that there was a Santa Claus. But you know, Santa truly exist, if only we wish harder; only if we truly believe, just as Taylor would.
