Once There was a Mansion

On my way to Salem, there was a certain melancholy harping in my heart. The weather had turned nasty and dim; clouds hover just above the highway. It was supposed to rain but that will be later in the day. And as I pass the trees that line the highway, they seem to play a tune, although it was not heard by the ear but by the heart. And in one of those places, where the field was stretched out towards the distant mountains in between those trees, I spotted a house; unoccupied, dismal, dilapidated but still standing as if defying the elements that punished it.

I wonder what had happened to this house. There was no other house standing near it. I can see through it; windows are still there, only the windows did not hinder someone to see through the next window and beyond. In between was a hallowed shell of a dwelling. Its skin was roughened by the weather. But inspite of all of these, it stands proud and grand.

Maybe, it was a mansion for the old moneyed denizens of the area. Perhaps, it was where gaiety once ruled; once, where its halls were the venue where singing and dancing occurred; once, where good company celebrated life. There was a multitude of people milling about talking and exchanging good humor. And on big occasions, on its grounds, there were fireworks and paraphernalia galore. This home was indeed a mansion to be admired.

But now, in her dismal state, she stood rejected. I wonder how, why. Where have all those people gone to? What happened to her from the days that saw her at her peak up until she was left abandoned? It was quite sad to see her today, in her state. It was like reminiscing those days that had gone by. It was like the heart that yearned but the yearning petered out and died.
