The Sandusky Affair 1/3/2012 11:12:09 AM
Russ posed a question to me, “Was Sandusky guilty of assaulting the young boys in the Penn State shower and locker room?” This, after a lengthy discussion with another guy. I did not answer him. I figured that he will have to determine that himself. But I guess the verdict was already out. Sandusky was guilty. Russ was a part of that group of people who gave verdicts even though the guy was not yet convicted. He, Russ, was part of that court of public opinion who says that Sandusky was guilty. Sandusky was charged, yes; but he was not yet convicted. Where I am concerned, the guy was not guilty because he was not yet heard in court and judgment had not yet been handed down. And in this country, no one is guilty unless proven otherwise.
I reasoned that there were 2 boys which were key (there were witnesses to their sexual assault) in the case that can put Sandusky in jail. But they were not willing to testify. However, 8 boys with no witness came forward to allege that Sandusky did assault them. Another one came forward and alleged the same, too. But I don’t know if these 8 or 9 boys were copy cats or out to get Sandusky to extract financial gratification. The two boys, earlier, seemed a more plausible case; but as I mentioned, they were not willing to testify.
Russ said that the Peter Pan mentality was not Sandusky’s. Peter Pan mentality was someone who was able to play with children without doing any harm to them. That someone was not able to molest or assault children. His education, his position on the board of organizations such as the Second Wind (?), and his standing in the community points to the fact that Sandusky did not have this mentality. (Michael Jackson, according to him, may have this kind of mentality.) According to Sandusky he merely played with the boys. This was not believable according to Russ. Second, why would Sandusky shower with boys in the gym of Penn State, off season? Third, if Sandusky did it to one boy in a separate incident, he must have done it to others. There was an undeniable pattern to his activities. Besides, Sandusky, denying assaulting the boys but rather playing with them, confessed to this.
I am not part of the jury that will hear or pass judgment to Sandusky. I didn’t know if he was guilty of assaulting the boys or innocently was just playing with them. But Russ was insistent in asking me “Was Sandusky guilty of assaulting the young boys in the Penn State shower and locker room?” I will have to say that he was charged but I would not be part of that court of public opinion to say that Sandusky was guilty…at least not yet.
