Marriages and Such 1/9/2012 11:18:16 AM
It was funny what my neighbor at the Portland Home Show said. They were in the Las Vegas Venetian Hotel when he proposed. It was awkward to propose in the first place because they were both strapped to the gondola; that if he knelt on one knee, they would topple over and be overthrown in a canal just chest deep. But he proposed, nonetheless. When they went out the hotel, he crowed like a rooster saying that she said YES; and he said this to everyone. Imagine that he acted like a rooster with arms flapping and his body wiggling. A bagpipe player, hearing his pronouncements started playing the wedding song and all was well. They went to O’Brien’s and he let her drink a Car Bomb composed of Bailey’s Irish Crème, Jamison and something else – a truly Irish drink that put her to sleep. So, no hanky panky actually occurred. She was his second wife. He had three children with his first wife while she had a son who now was employed in Benicia, California, by Tesoro, an oil company giant. He earned a very good income, indeed, granted that he attended a trade school and that Tesoro employed him right from trade school. His first wife was still a big honcho with Weyerhauser and now lived in Virginia (?) He said that when he divorced his first wife, his wife acquired everything leaving nothing to him. He sees his third child, now 15, every summer for two months. He said that he got tired of what wealth brings, the travels they had and the things that they get on occasions. To be average brings enough in life that one can still enjoy it.
To be average seemed to bring another outcome to another. As I told you, I market a high-end gutter system that those who was wealthy could purchase. When I offered it to a lady, the lady responded, “Maybe, in the future.” I ask why maybe. With some hesitancy, she said that she was unemployed. I understood that. But she proceeded in telling me that her husband left her…after 36 years. She said this in a very sad demeanor that if I force the issue of inquiring further, she would just end up crying. So I stopped and let her go. I watched her push her cart away and felt a sense of foreboding.
Sometimes I asked myself why separation or divorce occurred. Maybe, it was that sense of adventure to see if indeed the pasture was greener on the other side of life, like in my novel, “A Cottage in Another Country”. Maybe, it was the tired demeanor of one party to the other. Maybe, it was not accomplishing whatever objective both parties try to achieve. It was difficult to ask those questions in reality, for they might find my questions intrusive. But I could only surmise, hence I could just lay out my thoughts in my novel. A thing like this often fascinates me for I shall never know the answer.
It is left to conjecture why separation or divorce happens to us all. No one is immune, be it in second marriages or a relationship that last almost an entire lifetime.
