A man standing across from where I was seated seemed to be waiting. I worked in a bank many years ago and I was a New Accounts person. I had no customer at that time. But this man seemed to stand there for a long time. Perhaps, he was asleep. He had his cane right dangling from the counter where he rested his head on one of his hand. There was no teller, then. Suddenly, his cane came crashing to the floor as he too slid down. I stood up. In fact several of us did. The much older folks rushed to the counter and there, this dead man lay. The ambulance came and took him away. Poor man! I wondered about his family. He was an older gentleman and he just expired.
Well, last night, Copper, Mike and I were just talking. No, no one died. But I was just telling them about that other night when Sonia was there and talked about Jabberwocky; that I wouldn’t be at another bar because I was always at Greater Trumps. You see Greater Trumps was my home (aside from my real home and Starbucks just across the street.) And then I added that I’d live in Greater Trump and die in it; that was why the story of death came into the purview.
Well Mike had a story for us. When Mike was finishing up his education in culinary school, he served at a restaurant where a lady usually goes to. For years, she would be there, three times a week. She would order her favorite, filet of sole, eat slowly and after the first half, would fall asleep. When she had awakened, she would eat the rest and would go home. So the story goes, but she really enjoyed her meal. Well, she sat at the middle of the restaurant that time, and again she was served that filet of sole. She ate half of it, fall asleep and then supposedly, wake up and then eat the other half. Three hours had passed and there was no action on her part. So, Mike’s teacher puts a spoon by the ladies nose to see if there was air being blown out. Well, there wasn’t. So it was justifiable to assume that she died.
The restaurant was getting busier. Mike’s teacher called an ambulance and the company said that since the lady was dead, he should call the coroner’s office and let them take care of it. So he called the coroner. And the coroner said that they cannot pick them up until some authority gets to certify that she was dead. So he called again the ambulance company and they agreed to pick up the lady. The restaurant by that time was busy and she was in the middle of the room. The ambulance slowly and gingerly picked the lady up and sets her on a chair (or a table/bed) without any fuss in the middle of a busy restaurant and off they went.
His teacher then had the right to brag that a lady died while she was enjoying her meal, and no one can contest that.
Cooper said that he does not have the courage to put a spoon in the lady’s nose. But boy, a lady died in their midst, in the middle of a busy restaurant and gingerly rolled away by an ambulance. Of course, Mike’s finished his story by describing the different food dish. He said that he wants tartar, oxtail, foie gras and bone marrow.
