What is the other half doing today? 1/14/2012 10:42:24 PM
In the opening lines of “King Arthur and the Round Table,” the King asks, what is the other half of the body politic thinking today? It is indeed a curiosity what the other is thinking.
In our whiles, we somehow wonder what our partner is thinking about. We stop in our tracks, mesmerized by that possibility that our partner is thinking about us. We wonder but not giving any hints that we want them to think about us; and in so doing, we are actually thinking about them.
I had a girlfriend who wondered if I had been thinking about them. She asked me if I dream about her. Did it naturally occurred or was it forced? I, of course, answered that the dream came naturally and those dreams were not mindless thoughts about her. I said that I actually dreamed about her. Naturally, I always thought about her; but dream about her? I don’t have any control whether today, I shall dream about her. I lied. I thought about her. But dreams, well, they are a little different.
There was another one who called me at work. (She was a student at the nearby university who was taking something of a graduate course. So she was not this young college girl you might be thinking about.) I was busy working. The night before, we had an enjoyable meeting and I think she was enamored with me. She then proceeded to call me when I was at my busiest. I listened to what she was saying. Her voice was sultry. Her inflection became subdued. Although I wanted to hear her more, my job beacons and I have to tell her that we should talk tonight, again.
So is it them thinking about me or me, about them, when unconsciously I try to wiggle myself out of the dilemma?
How about a parent to a child, when the child demands attention or the parent cajoles the child to act in a certain way? How about the teacher to his students when the student wanted to learn or the teacher wanted the student to learn?
So the King asks what the people are thinking about. It so happened that the citizens was thinking about what the King was doing or thinking.
Indeed, you are lucky if it’s you that they are thinking about.
