Russ was at Greater Trumps chomping on his cigar like royalty. He has his scotch and beer to boot and with an air of down home simplicity starts off a conversation. Not to me, of course (since I am typing this blog). He conversed with San Francisco Mike (yes, another Mike. There are five Mike’s that I know of at Greater Trumps. There was Mike (the original Mike), Pdx (Portland International Airport) Mike, Mission (as in Mission theater) Mike, Policeman Mike and San Francisco Mike.) Russ and San Francisco Mike were the guys I had joined in when we discussed the Sandusky Affair.
But royalty was being turned on its head. In fact, I am the one Russ was pointing to when it comes to royalty. It all started when he notice that I have a resemblance to Congressman Wu. Congressman Wu was that just re-elected Congressman who had the notoriety about having some antics. Eventually, he had some sexual affair that put him in hot water and eventually, he resigned his post. For the longest time, Russ called me Congressman. But since the congressman was ousted, I was made to be an ambassador. So, for 6 months, I am now Ambassador Wu.
Everytime Russ sees me, he calls me Ambassador. And ambassador is it until such time that we talked about Martin Luther King. And the thought of rechristening me King was in the works. I have not yet attained that status, though. Although, I chomp on a cigar or two and drink 1 pint of beer (sometimes, 2) a night I don’t think that I have that cache to be called “king”.
So, when the day ends, when Russ finished chomping on his cigar and finished his scotch and beer, he would put on his coat and pause. He would look at me and say, “do the right thing” and we would shake hands. And off he goes out that door. And I would be awe struck with how he says things for he would add in the end, “…ambassador.”
