Carelessness hurts! I burned my right hand 12/27/2008 9:32:21 AM
This morning, half asleep, wandering in the kitchen.... not paying attention, I burned my hand, and it's blistering. This getting old is truly getting on my nerves!! What happens to our minds when we take things for granted, and just plow through life not realizing that our minds and bodies are changing. I refuse to get old, but my body and mind just doesn't want to cooperate!! What's wrong with that picture? Well...we moved to a new house in late October, and in the kitchen is a new glasstop/ceramic stove. I've had beautiful homes with fancy kitchens before, but never had one of these glasstop stoves. For some reason, I just never wanted one, thinking they wouldn't cook as good as a stove that looks like a stove...you know with burners that have flames coming out! I cook everything on high. I cook everything in 5 minutes or less. Or I don't cook! So, that is why most people laugh when they find out I was once the Betty Crocker Future Homemaker of Tomorrow....you know way back before Martha Stewart!! Well...I've been using the new stove fairly well, no problems cooking...but...cleaning the darn thing....Well...impossible. So, everytime I walk by the darn stove, I'm always wiping it clean, wiping the dust, wiping the lttle drops of whatever, or the salt sprinkles..and on it goes. This morning, Joe got up early as usual, had been making some hot cocoa and I normally don't even get out of bed for another hour or more. Not this morning! In my slippers and gown, I head to the kitchen, no lights are on, everything is neat and no mess anywhere....except......dust on the stovetop.... so...with my right hand...the whole hand....I sort of wipe across the top lightly....and then I scream!!!! That is when I notice that on the overhead control area....is a red light....and underneath is written..."stove top hot when light is on" DUH!!!!!! Who would have known? Anyway....I panicked as I was screaming..the pain is awful. Joe came running in and said, "honey, I just warmed up milk for the cocoa on the stove".... and I said... "I know that now". "Do you need ice?" "Do you need butter?" "I don't know" I'm crying and panicking...so I run to the water faucet....turn it on, put my burned hand under the water, and it's not cold...it's HOT...so now it hurts more!!!.....I don't remember anymore, do you put cold or hot or butter on burns? Sure I know you can put aloe vera on it (I think) but everyday we hear about some world famous remedy no long a remedy...Instead what we did to fix something is now the cause!! So...I've run my hand under hot water....Accident #2...and then Joe hands me 9 ice cubes!!!! I only need one!! I rub it on the palm, and thumb where it's burned and turning red....and it's cold but it feels better than Hot. It just hurts. Well, now I find myself "limping" to my bedroom, with my "whole arm" folded in front of my body....barely able to walk...then Joe has to help me onto this humongous tall bed, and I can't fold the covers over me... I'm now near death...."What can I get you honey?"..... "Will you make me some tea darling?".....off he goes. I look at my laptop begging me to pick it up and turn it on. My future as a writer is now in peril. No, I can't write...I can tell...the pain is bad...besides the hand is getting all these little blisters all over the palm and up the thumb and forefinger....Oh My...what am I going to do? Slide further under the covers, the hot tea arrives...I sip on it, having to hold the hot cup with my left hand of course... then.... the laptop calls me..not taking No for an answer. I plug it in after I crawl down from the huge bed, and then I have to heave back onto the bed without using my right hand... I use the left hand to push the "on" button...and then I manage to read a few emails...and before you know it, I've forgotten that my burned hand is blistered and I'm in agony, as I begin writing this blog. Wow..I'm really good.. I am definitely a writer. Just like the postman...thru snow and sleet they deliver...Well...thru burns and injury and mental anguish...I am determined to write... dedication is necessary if one truly wants to succeed. So...I will push my hand forward...and...you will not be spared.... you will continue to hear from me....because I know you have faith in me....inspite of my blisters and emotional pain. I know that if I had been thru this before I joined AD...well...I probably would not have had the confidence and determination to climb this mountain...but...because of you...I can succeed... I will.... OH...I forgot...this blog was about getting old and remembering....oops...
