TheOther Side of the Coin.... 10/2/2009 2:32:41 PM
My blog "Torn between Tears and Fears" was just posted, but for those who take the time to read it...I also wanted to share another view.... The job as I've explained below has its ups and downs...and the rental increase has brought many angry complaints, some justified, others just because some people will be mad no matter what! One thing that I have attempted to do, along with being understanding with the residents as to "why" they think the increase is not fair, justified, etc....I do want them to know that there is another side. Most of us don't want to hear the other side of a story, because we become set in our way, unwilling to listen, and obviously it wouldn't matter if Jesus appeared before us and explained the reason...the same naysayers would be the first to throw rocks!
My employer isn't perfect. On the otherhand, she is a kind, and God loving, believing woman who cares about so many others. Most of the employees have been with her for many years, even a couple of decades in some cases....There has to be a positive reason for that, wouldn't one think? I do believe that. Times are hard all around... We tend to think only about the big giant conglomerates who have stolen from us....the banks, wall street, the CEO's who drained the coffers and bankrupted many solid good companies. We also think about those who are simply dishonest, uncaring, and plain old moneygrubbers.... draining the employees of every ounce of hard work, with rarely a kind word or even any type of monetary reward or recognition. There are those types all over this world...and I've known some of them personally... however; even though I've only been here 4 months beginning this month... I know that this is not a humongous, greedy company, owned by a greedy uncaring woman! She has a family that she loves and cares for, she runs the company along with her staff and she takes time to talk to us on many levels.. My sister was very ill this past month, and my boss took it upon herself to pray, to say a Rosary for my sister in the wee hours before sis's surgery; and she let me know we were in her thoughts. Those are not things that many CEO's or owners of companies, etc will take time to do for the little guy who works for them....at least, it hasn't been my experience in life to see that very often.
Bills have to be paid. Our park doesn't run by magic, even though it's been rumored to run by fairy dust ??? It takes money to keep it spotless, to repair streets, and signs, and keep the equipment for the residents running at peak performance. It takes money to maintain a great reputation within a large city, and to keep residents happy to live here for years on end. I've had the privilege of hearing many on the other side of the anger spectrum tell of how they've lived here for 25 years, 20 years, 18 years, and on it goes... I've visited the competition all around us as this is sort of a Seniors Capital of sorts...(:-) and I know that rents are often much higher, do not have the lovely, clean and safe community that ours has, and so I take offense to having my company put down... Like I said...it isn't perfect... There are things I would change, and maybe one day they will...but for now, I'm not here to make change; I'm simply here to make things more satisfying, and to fill that need to have someone listen, to have the door open, to respond to the calls, and to smile as I do my best to explain why...
Once our minds are made up to disagree...it becomes almost impossible to listen to the other side... I know there is another side; and I do understand both of them. I live on one end...the not so plentiful end; and I am smart enough to know that the owners don't always understand our view....however; free enterprise has earned them their position, and I doubt it was a free ride to get to that place... what I've heard called "That Ivory Tower"....
We must step back sometimes, especially those of you who work for middle to small companies...and we must attempt to understand that they too are fighting for what they've worked hard to earn (with our help, of course) all these years. It takes "the team" to achieve and win... and although we are all having hard times, the bills keep coming...for both of us....and that becomes the bottom line in decisions that we often do not understand...or simply...don't want to understand...
This is my view of my personal situation...and I felt that there was a reason for the "other side of the coin"...
