Here's lookin' at you kids.... 4/5/2010 9:44:55 PM
Live today as if it's your last.... How many times have we heard that one? Another day, another quarter...used to be, another day, another dollar~ what happened to those good ole' days?
We fussed about those good ole' days when we were living them..never realizing those would end up being the best days of our lives... Sort of like that song, "You've had the best love of your life"...meaning...you should have taken care of it while you had it~
The job has only about 40 days left for me...and naturally, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong...yet I remain hopeful that "this too shall pass". Whoever thought up those great sayings sure knew what he/she was talking about... who knew?
Good Friday was here and I didn't realize it was good...then I thought about my Master up there and came down to earth again. Even that didn't hit my noggin' that Sunday was Easter! See...now that the kids are gone, and the little ones don't know who you are...well, there's no more coloring eggs and buying bunnies and chocolates... All I knew was that it was another weekend. Joyful and thankful for that in and of itself...Ahhhh...weekends!
Decided to take a late morning (I don't take sick days) as I was feeling sort of sick...couldn't quite pinpoint what was wrong) so I got to work an hour later than usual..(dummy here just couldn't miss work...how would I deal with being less than perfect and responsible?) Anyway... people were waiting when I got there...First lady sat down and grilled me about another resident that I am having to evict...Seems most people expect me to physically go to the home, grab the resident and throw him onto the street myself! Forget about paperwork, attorneys and court...afterall...it's "Him" and not "you".... so...they didn't want to hear about policy and legal process... Then the next person came in roaring like a lion...Her electric bill is too high! Well, imagine that... I suppose I'm the one who slips into her home during the night and sets the A/C to below frigid so she can be cool and comfy all nite...or...maybe I set the heater on so she can be warm and toasty on those cold (yeh...sure) Arizona nights! Then...another man stops by..one I don't recognize...and he informs me he's bought a home here and has a "mover" scheduled to lift the house and take it out of the community!!!! Go figure!!! Never been done here before I was told...and furthermore...I'd better be ready to throw myself in front of the humongous truck that will move it...or...better yet...try to run over me in order to move it! No...this was just another day in Lalaland...and so it went..one fiasco after another...and it wasn't even April Fools Day...that day thankfully passed without so much as a joke...so much for humor! Another resident couldn't pay the rent herself....so...she managed to get several people to help her with that...and therefore...she handed me three money orders, two checks, and various denominations of actual cash and change...in order to have the full amount for the month of April... I smiled as I wrote the receipt and listed all the separate methods of payment to total the correct amount... This was just one of those Mondays...like most others..except...more dark and ominous!
Thing is...I've smiled thru most of these events over the past year...killing them with kindness has been my motto..and then..."She's just a dumb blonde..." seemed to be the whispers I felt rather than heard. Another man came in and yelled at me...literally yelled...because his neighbor has an "old ugly truck" in his driveway! How dare anyone have such an unsightly monstrosity on his block no less! Well, I smiled like I had no good sense and said..."I wish he could afford a nice car like yours, but obviously he can't...so...until he figures out a way to trade his in or he hits the lottery...we may just have to let him keep his ugly truck." Not funny the neighbor said to me...not funny at all...he said that a few times! Thing is..when I got home after this fabulously exciting day... my mate said..."What has happened to you? I recall when you used to put people in their place in a New York second...but now...well, you just smile and never tell anyone off."
I thought about it for a second...or maybe ten seconds..and then I smiled for good reason...(killing with kindness stuff)...and said, "Well...I suppose I figured out that getting all worked up just wasn't doing my heart or my health much good...so...when the old ticker began to feel like it wanted to jump out of my chest...and I began to sweat from the pressure of it all...I just decided to take a second, put on the smile that drives residents to drink and worse...and then...well...I managed to get thru another day without having a heart attack or even a stroke." I reminded him that...I prefer not to allow others to get me so riled up that I end up suffering for it by making myself sick! So much for reasoning.... he called it cowardice... Who knows? Maybe one persons idea of being a coward, and another's idea is sheer common sense. (Guess which one I believe in?) So... I sure hope your day was better than this one I just had...and until next time...
Here's lookin' at you kids.... oh...and don't forget to smile...you know...not like The Joker...but a real smile...I promise it does wonders for you!
Hugs and stuff,
