The very first copy of Lest Ye Be Judged arrived on Thursday. It looks beautiful and my God it's big. I compared it to the sizes of the trade paperbacks that I have from my other books that were published with Genesis and Parker and it's only 1/2 inch larger but ti still seem huge.
The size of the book matters when you're doing it yourself. Now I know why both publishers were always trying to get me to write shorter.
I have learned some things during this venture that I had not really focused on before. I just knew that these books were expensive and thought they could be priced lower. I hadn't know that the cost of printing was a biggie and that right off the bat you have to give 40% discount to the stores that will carry your book or to Amazon.
Now let me tell you the one thing that I should have done but missed. Remember I told you already that I wouldn't have attempted this if the book had not been professionally edited by my same editor at Genesis Press and Parker Publishing, Sidney Rickman.
Well, I had several versions of the story and had changed the title and in some versions the header was changed to reflect that. I must admit that Bill told me I shouldn't keep naming my files the same, but I thought I needed to in order not to forget the names of the files. I have done that.
Okay the book was sent to me to proof and guess what? The title was wrong in the header. I had to correct that resubmit and of course you have to pay to have it reset and a new copy sent. That was an expense I could have avoided if I had paid more attention. Would it had mattered if I had allowed the book to come out that way? You bet your ??insert whatever word you want to use. LOL. But yes it would have mattered. There are many people who actually spend their lime looking for mistakes. Then there are of course readers like myself who are just annoyed with errors in books. I think if I'm presenting a product to the public I should do everything in my power to make it as error free as possible. Though I've never in my life seen a book free of error I still want to try.
Where I am now is waiting for the next proof. Then I have to approve it. Yesterday I received an email with industry news of other authors taking their careers into their own hands. It gave me hope. I'll continue to let you know how this all plays out. But for the moment I'm feeling really good. YEAH Me!!! Have a great weekend.
