Friends or Controllers 1/28/2005 9:11:52 PM
"doesn't give them the
right to run our lives."
Out for lunch with a friend today.
while we were eating a couple
next to us were having an
arguement about friendships.
The young man said "You are
the one that stopped going to
their house and began saying
no to everyones invitations."
His wife replied "Just because
they are best friends since we
married doesn't give them the
right to run our lives."
their voices began to get louder
attracting others to stare at them
He said"They aren't running our
lives, but if they are you are the one
that fell all over them to begin with
not me. They knew you before I did
and you let me know I was expected
to like them as much as you did."
She almost shouted" Yes but not to
do everything they tell you to do"
He got up and said "Lets go"
After they left my friend and I continued
the discussion by talking about similar
things in our own lives. How people
can be best friends and after years go by
you want to step back away from the
relationship a little. You have changed
and have other interests. Yet the friends
get highly insulted and upset, because
you no longer want to do everything
their way.
It's then you realize that as long as you
did everything they wanted you were their
good friend, but the moment you wanted
some time for yourself, they began saying
things like"I think you're losing it",Maybe
you should see a shrink" etc. Then the
truth of the relationship becomes evident.
Some people only want you as a puppet
to move you around any way they choose.
That's why the saying that if you find one true
friend you are lucky indeed! I have three good
friends that have never tried to interfere in
my life nor I in theirs. We have been friends
for 20 years without an incident. I know that
sounds almost impossible, but it isn't. Two of
the friends I only see about once a month.
The one I went out with today is my best friend
I see twice a week. The rest of the time it's
phone calls, but not daily ,only when there's
something important to say.
My friends know that I cherish my privacy
and they don't intrude on it. I am very odd
that way,my friends usually have to call me
I rarely initiate the calls or anything else for
that matter. Maybe that's why our relationships
have been without incident. ;-) It's important
to have friends that you can be content with
otherwise it doesn't make sense. Having to
force it only leads to problems. I have several
other friends but I call them good aquaintences.
they are different than the friends you have for
a lifetime that know you well enough to vouch for
your integrity.
