Johnny Mathis' "A Certain Smile" 3/5/2009 10:56:52 PM
Some songs have such magic in them that can take us back to the past, revive the golden memories of yesterdays, and caress one's weary heart with tender longings. Last night I heard a mellow song of the famed Johnny Mathis,
a song made famous around the 1950's and I was taken back in time by its lyrical words and haunting melody.
"A Certain Smile"
A certain smile, a certain face,
Can lead an unsuspecting heart on a merry chase
A fleeting glance can say so many lovely things,
Suddenly you know how your heart sings...
You love a while, and when love goes
You try to hide the tears inside
With a cheerful pose
But in the hush of night
Exactly like a bitter sweet refrain,

To haunt your heart again."
I remember the song was played at my sister's debut party
and the dance then was called "Slow Drag". The couples danced it so sweetly with the girls in their hair-sprayed
hairdo's and the guys in neck ties and long sleeves, hair
glistening with pomade (yuck!)
The song has been etched in my memory, and it also brought back the scene where my parents watched my eldest sister
go from bobby socks to stockings. Those were the days.
