The Love for Books 4/13/2009 12:24:25 AM
When we were in grade school, my brother and I were comic book fanatics. We had a collection of Marvel Comic Books, from Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Baby Huey, Ritchie Rich,
and all those super heroes. We would read those comic books repeatedly and my brother, because he was an artist, loved the artwork. I used to cry when Spiderman and Mary Jane had a spat, and had a childhood fear of Bizzaro, Superman's arch enemy. The problem was, our Dad hated the comic books and told us we won't learn good English grammar from reading the "trash". My brother kept his comics, and hid them under his mattress, but I was diverted to reading books, - the real ones. I read our
Book of Knowledge Encyclopedia from volume one to twenty. In addition, I traveled from "Little Women" to "Les Miserables" to "Oedipus Rex". I read the classics from Greek mythology and tragedies to Shakespeare, John Milton, Edgar Allan Poe, to the rest of the masters in Literature. Unknowingly, my Dad developed my love for books, a treasure I will always be grateful to him for.
Today I tell my children (adults 33,32,19) that computers are good, but books are better. What we have stored in computers can be wiped out by a virus, what we store in our minds can never be erased, except of course, by Alzheimer.
