"I don't want you to be a starving writer!" My Dad glared at me when he found out I enrolled in a Journalism course in defiance to his will for me to take up Economics (UGH!) and Finance. Of course we had a long debate and he won because he handled the finances for my college expenses. Today I write and he cannot stop it. The passion is all consuming and I'll starve if I starve but I'll starve writing. My last poem about a framed-up US soldier put my life on the line because of this passion. My Dad got out of his coma when he found out! This June I even intend to take up investigative Journalism and maybe in a year be where the action is - writing poems about war crimes, intrigue, bombs, and dead bodies. (Morbid!)
Today it's even harder to gain some financial rewards for writing poetry, people think it's passe. Poetry? What's that? The young people say and they'd rather buy the latest cellphone than buy a book of poems! And then there's the volume of publications that flood bookstores every month!!!!
How can an unknown poet/writer even hope to break into such
stiff competition? Even Obama's book has jumped into the melee!
So why does a "starving writer" like me write? It is joy in itself. I used to wonder why some write even when they get death threats, or get killed and assassinated, like that Russian writer who died of poisoning. Why exchange the pen for life? Writers I think will die for their pen - anytime.
