There are so many troubles and problems in the average person's life that we all must accept our victories and blessings where they come from. Today is one of those blessings for me. Ten years ago this morning at 7:32 AM EST, I was rolled into a freezing cold operating room in an attempt to save my life.
No it wasn't a emergency situation, there was no car accident, no heart attack, no ruptured spleen. There were four tiny masses spread out between my two breasts. The biopsy show that they contained the fastest growning form of breast cancer and left untreated, they would kill me within three years.
I had every confidence that I would live, yet I had prepared myself for death. I had made peace with the idea of no longer being me, in this time and this place. I realized that my children would miss me, but knew I had given them enough love for two lifetimes and that they would lean on each other if I was gone.
I prepared my father for the possibility of my demise with the same love and affection he had shown me all my life.
I even wrote about the experience. What I didn't do was invite and embrace death. I prepared, but never expected to go.
Slowly my life came back together after the surgery. True, I will never be the same, but in many ways I'm a better person for having faced death and not shied away from it, nor encouraged it.
Have a great day, and lift a glass of water, milk, so or whatever to my anniversay and the great and generous God who made it possible.
