One More Week 4/10/2009 2:05:55 AM
Usually I not one to do countdowns, but this year is an excepion. There only five more working days left in tax preparation for me. But these five days and night will seem like a year. there are two reasons for the dragging one of time.
The first is the hours I'll be putting in. I went into work at 9 yesterday morning and left work at 8:30. that's a long day and when you factor in the 45 minute bus ride each way it gets even longer.
the second reason is that at least 75% of the returns I do at this time of the season are for people who owe money to the IRS. They are not happy campers when I tell them how much they owe.
So for the next five work days I try to be especially pleasant and gracious to my clients. Water, cookies and candy are offered and encouraged. I go into great detail of how I got to the numbers and I give them all the worksheets that provide me with them.
This year, my boss decided to try something new. We will be open non-stop from Monday morning at 9 until wednesday night at midnight. guess who gets the overnight shift. Me of course. So I'll be going in from 7pm until 7am monday and tuesday night. Trust me I will bring both of my flash drives with me so that I can work on my writing because I don't think I'm going to get many people doing their taxes at 4am on either night.
Hopefully, next year I'll be working at the university and not doing taxes for a living. It's not that I don't like doing them, it's that I only do them for 15 weeks of the year and then have to find another job. At 61 it's hard to find a job. I've already sent out 35 resumes and gotten no replys. Not even a sorry we already filled the postion.
I will miss the freedom that being a tax preparer allowed me, but I need to have a regular job with a guarenteed pay check every week. So onward I search. I'll keep you posted on my success. Florida is a hard place for find work for anyone. of my ten immediate neighbors only three are working at the moment. six were downsized out of their jobs and one was let go because the company closed its doors after 75 years in business.
On another note, the response to my poetry challenge was wonderful. Each poem was a work of art and very different from the others. They ranged from 2 lines to 35(that was mine and I broke the rules to do it) If you haven't read any of the poems they are all about what being a poet means to the writer. I thought it was justified because April is Nationl Poetry Month.
I got a new program for my computer on making your own ebooks. Now all I have to do is learn to use it. When I do I'm going to put out a free inspiritional ebook of some of my posted poems. When it's done you are all welcome to download a copy for yourself or your friends.
