I was just reminded that today is Friday the 13th. Being of Irish/Italian descent you would think I would be steeped in traditional, heeby-jeeby, superstitions. I'm not. I don't think black cats are bad luck, I don't throw spilled salt over my shoulder to ward off evil, and I don't believe that Friday the 13th is inherently bad or unlucky. True it was very unlucky for the Knights Templar, but that was because the King of France and the Pope of the time both owed them huge amounts of money and didn't want to have to pay them back.
True, being a rational human being was challenging in an Italian household where everything had a hidden meaning, or was an omen of things to come, but I managed to escape most of the damaging effects of such an upbringing.
And, of course, there are those in our secular society who think is insane to believe in an invisible God. To them I say He is not invisible to me. I see him in every blade of grass, every flower, every bird and butterfly. I hear Him in every bird's song, every breeze rustling the branches of trees, every babbling of a brook and every giggle of a baby.
I know Him by His works, by His answers to my prayers, and by the love He has shown me through 60 plus years of life. He has seen me through the death of loved ones, cancer, childbirth and surgery. To those who doubt, I say, I can't see or hear air, but I know it's there because if it weren't I would be dead.
As the saying goes, "for those who believe no proof is needed, for those who don't no proof is enough."
