School Days Again!!! 4/1/2009 2:35:43 PM
Sometimes I make decisions that I later wonder about. I got a letter in the mail yesterday that I've been waiting for. It was printing on orange paper so that these old eyes wouldn't mistake it for junk mail. The letter I'm referring to is from Florida Atlantic University. It's notice that my financial aid has been okayed on a probational status since I'm a first time student. Yes, this old lady whose only 4 years from being able to legally retire from the work force is going back to school.
I didn't know exactly what program I wanted to follow, but as a second bacholar's candidate I had to tell them something I picked accounting. (Yeah, right, a poet spending the rest of her life at a desk in a tiny cubical counting beans.) Can't you just see it. Well, it got me in. Now I'll take classes for two semesters before entering the MFA program in Creative Writing. I should graduate one year shy of 65.
You may be asking yourself why it was important for me to bother you with this drival. Well, there is a reason. Last Friday, I spent several hours on campus. The energy, the movement, the laughter were intoxicating. I felt 10 years younger by the time I left. On Monday I had to go back, and dropped another 10 years. All I can tell you is was as if I bathe in the fountain of youth, no pun intended.
The English department, had a wonderful array of writer journals from all over the country and they offered them all to me. and the advisor told me that the instructors I would be taking classes from for the summer semester are the members of my evaluation committee for admittance into the MFA program.
So, if you have the time, or are in a place where you can take classes with younger people go for it, it will make you feel younger, give you a new perspective on life and great material for your characters or poetry subjects.
What more could any writer ask for in life except publication and with the above three the last may came easier.
