Eastern Promises 1/14/2008 7:05:05 AM
I watched Eastern Promises the other day. For some reason I assumed it would be set in L.A. as there is a fair Russian mob contingency there. I like being wrong. Never would have pegged London as a foreign criminal vortex...who knew? I don't understand why the press is making much of seeing Mr. Mortensen aka "Nikolai" in the buff, however. Good grief are we so repressed that one butt etc. can stir up half the universe? Sheesh. Not only that but(t)- ha - how the hell else would one take on not one, but two, thugs in a bathouse? Hold onto the towel? Snap them with it? Give me a break, it's just a scene, and a well played one at that, butt and all. I happened to like "A History of Violence" and so I was looking forward to seeing what the collboration between the same director and actor would produce this time around. I was not disappointed. There is an excellent twist when....ha, wouldn't give it away even if you asked. And not everything is obvious - and I really liked that aspect of the film. It addresses a subject matter about which most people know nothing and did so well. If you don't mind a little violence and sex, this is a good film you'll probably enjoy, too.
