Owl on a Fence 5/13/2008 10:59:57 AM
God, yesterday was completely cool but weird all at once. Ok, first, Sunday eve. In Showtime's "The Tudors" is it my imagination or does some INSANE period of time pass in, like, five minutes. One minute Anne Boleyn is pregnant; five minutes later, Elizabeth is born; then Elizabeth is one month old; but one minute later, the kids is, like, three. Ok, so either time is passing stupidly fast or some amazing genetic mutation occurred that allowed such....speed of reproduction. Still, the show is good camp, all fun, little history - excellent viewing.
So I'm driving home when....now you know this will be good....I have to take alternate route because husband is stranded after patrol unit breaks down. (2003 Ford Expedition - true to the acronym: Found On Road Dead)Naturally, there is a bit where I must take the "back road" to cut across the rez.
Looming black clouds bode ill for the second rain hits a back road in this country it turns to gumbo - fast. AWD or no, you're not going ANYWHERE without 4WD, period. So now I am panicked and soon dodging some of the biggest chuckholes in the road I have ever encountered in my life. Seriously, one was at least 8-feet across and two-feet deep with a ragged but steep edge that eats tires and struts alive. Dip, dodge, bounce, bounce then...HORSE!!!!!! No, HORSES!!!!!! Shait this mare came flying out into the road all spooked. That horse was flying.
As I am passing, I realize why: another mare's colt was in trouble - upside-down and caught in barbed wire struggling. Egads. So I had to stop and offer assistance...in my little Italian shoes, pink (yes, PINK) jacket, and highwaters lovingly dubbed, "capris" - Jesus, I must have looked like some foufy nightmare out of Sex and the City - I swear. No wonder the chick took one look and refused the offer - can't say that I could have cut barbed wire - I should make a point to put a knife in the car in the event this happens again. Found out later colt did just fine - minimal cuts and just scared to death. Sheesh. I could have held it still - I don't care if I get all muddy, the poor thing was completely freaked out.
Finally made it through the obstacle course and animal drama to a fairly flat patch of road. I notice what appears to be a young spotted eagle on a fence post. Coming closer, I am overjoyed when I realize it is a baby barn owl. GOD they are SOOOOO cute - I WISH I had my camera with me - from now on, I am going to carry one. That way when I exit the vehicle, I will look like some foufy tourist and the little owl will oblige, being as stunned by the sight as colt-woman, as I photograph his most lovely face.
