Today is a laughing day, I have decided. I'm not quite sure why, but it just feels like one of those odd days where everything is funny. It brings to mind a dialogue between my friend, Mondo and Judge Morrison when I was a green prosecutor:
Mondo's client had failed to appear and the officers were there for trial.
Me: Your honor, I request a bench warrant.
Judge M.: Mr. Oliveras, where is the defendant?
Mondo: You honor, my client,...my client is not here because he is a decedent.
Me: Stifled giggle.
Judge M.: Excuse me...did you say a decedent?
Mondo: Yes, yes...your honor he could not be here because he is a decedent.
Me: Harder to stifle giggle. Glare from Mondo with whispered "what's so funny?" I turn beet red.
Judge M.: Well Mr. Oliveras, with all due respect, don't you think I would know he was a decedent before you. You would know he was a defendant but the Court would be best to ascertain first whether he is a decedent, correct?
Mondo shuffles papers around and pulls up the alleged decedent's file; opens it; reads the paper and turns a deeper shade of red than me.
Mondo: Um...your honor, I was mistaken...he is not a decedent but a merchant semen.
Judge M.: A merchant...WHAT?
Me: Laughing now, can't hold it in. Officers laughing; bailiff laughing; feels like episode of "Night Court"
Mondo now laughing.
Mondo: I am sorry, you honor...he is a merchant sea-man...seaman. And I have a letter here saying he is...at sea.
Judge M.: Very well then. I'll continue this matter.
