The Wild Horse Sanctuary 8/9/2008 9:20:37 PM
Today we visited the wild horse sanctuary in Hot Springs, SD. To say it was a joy and completely awesome would be an understatement. My heart was very heavy, and has been for a few days now. I am representing a friend in a criminal case that is very serious; and yesterday, I had to visit him and tell him that the offer being made meant he would go to prison for five years...years. It was simply awful.
And I made every analysis of trial I could think of; every permutation of evidence; every possible avenue testimony could take...and plea was the best route. He could get life...my God. How do you tell someone their freedom will be taken away and expect the day will be like any other? You can't. It's heinous. Ah, so today's day trip was so welcome and necessary. Sometimes, I freakin' HATE the criminal justice system...it is so flawed, so fallible....
We took the two hour tour and Dwayne (a good, kind man) took 10 of us all around what was the McClure homestead. Now 11,000 acres, the sanctuary houses 700 horses. Mel and I saw a couple of colts we are going to buy to help support what they do.
Dwayne even gave me, ye olde rock hounde, a REEEAAALLYY cool rock. The petroglyphs were beyond wonderful; and just being outside and where Mel's people were for so many hundreds of years was humbling and awe inspiring. I enjoyed listening to the kids freak out when the turkeys showed up or when you could see a deer through the trees.
And we met two ladies who were filming a documentary who were really interesting to talk to. We all hung out until almost sun down talking with Dwayne who is a book in and of himself. Like I said, a lovely, kind man. The ladies want to talk to us later- and geez, it was spiritually cleansing. I so needed that fresh air and sun; and the scent of grass and flowers.
I would highly recommend this site and web site (google South Dakota wild horse sanctuary) It is totally privately funded; and I now intend to support the hell out of their operation. We have to protect the wild places and wild things that live there. It is something I want to do until the day I die. I truly believe that we are caretakers of this place that has given so much to men. SO much taken from earth and too little given back in return. This place, these horses, rabbits, turkeys, deer, flowers, grass, cacti...all of it...we must care for it because it is as much a part of us as we are of it. All alive; all created by...God. On that note, shoot, it's after 11 p.m. - time to watch a flick and ponder what I experienced and dream about it. It's ALL good.
