I am feeling neither prolific nor particularly literate today. It's just one of those "I love trees" days where I think about how beautiful the trees are when they bud and bloom and bright, spring leaves take the place of straggling brown ones. I came across a photo of trees in New Jersey from one fall and the blazing red was so intense. Come to think of it, I have always loved photos of flowers, grasses, plants, animals. But something about trees - I love drawing them. When I lived in northern Cali, in the redwood forest area, I remember crawling into a hole in one of those giant trees. I say "hole," but really it was about eight or nine feet tall and there was enough space inside to set up camp. And it was so quiet in there, I wanted to curl up and go to sleep. Those redwoods were amazing. They surrounded our house and have a distinct, earthy smell that I have never experienced anywhere else. I was fortunate enough to wait until after the winter rains to go exploring a then-dry creek bed. I found a worn down redwood brach, hollowed out inside and about five-feet long, with beautiful patterns where the bark had been worn off by the rushing waters and a knot that had become a hole. That thing was heavy, but I managed to carry over andunder fallen trees, rocks, crags, and a field to get it home. It shines this burnished chestnut color. I love to admire it in the sunlight. Face it, I am a sucker for natural beauty. Perhaps I will post my favorite drawing of a birch tree done while I was in architecture school at USC. It is SUCH a la dee da day.
