Ah, the first day of school. Everybody seems to wait until this day to come and get their books. Our line wound out from the registers to the back of the store, up to the front of the store, all the way to the back again, and then up to the front, clogging the doorway. Luckily, I was walking the floor (as opposed to checking people out), helping students find their books and trying to keep things at least somewhat organized. Our internet was down, as expected, since Follet stores all around the country were swamped with students, and so every single credit card was being called in and verified. I was unable to perform my duties as shipper/receiver, due to the lack of internet access, and so I paced the floor, leaving an hour early since my services were not needed.
The one turnoff about working in such a place as the college bookstore is as follows. CGCC is where everybody who can't afford to go to ASU goes. As such, many many people whom I've assumed that I'd never see again pop up. Simply put, people that I know come through, and with the exception of people down the road that I've known since I was a kid, it's a painful and disturbing experience. Other than that, however, the job is wonderful, and tonight I start my Personal and Exploratory Writing class. I read the introduction to the book last night, and if the class (or ever the rest of the book) is anything similar than I'm in for a very enjoyable semester, despite how boring I fear journalism might be.
