Waiting for Inspiration? 8/22/2009 8:06:06 AM
If you wait for inspiration, you will not find it; nor will it find you. It can be like standing on a deserted intersection and looking up and down the street to see shuttered store fronts and empty streets with no street signs to show the way. And so, today as I sit in front of the computer and do what seasoned, successful writers tell us. I simply start to write. At first it feels like riding a rusty old bicycle or playing an out-of-tune piano. I have to hop on and loosen up the bike pedals or stroke the piano keys and then and only then will my “instrument” work.
Waiting for inspiration might be like waiting for love; it’s illusive, desirable and can’t be forced. Whether one believes in prayer, luck, coincidence, hard work or a combination thereof, I think good things will come in time. I believe in going with my “gut feeling”, working hard and surrounding myself with loving and positive people. Negativism, pessimism, and criticism can grow like a cancer in the soul and will kill the spirit and quench creativity, productivity, and yes, even love.
So, to my writer friends, don’t fold the laundry, do the dishes or clean out the lint filter of your dryer in order to avoid writing. Sit in the chair; take pen in hand or hit the keyboard and eventually inspiration will come. Maybe your story or poem will chug along in fits and starts, but it will come. A clean sheet of paper is meant to be filled up. So write on!
