After many years and countless miles living in the dark tunnel of an eating disorder, our family emerged healthy and free to share our story in order to help others. My memoir, Through the Tunnel of Love, A Mother’s and Daughter’s Journey with Anorexia, was released on April 15 and is currently available on Amazon.com. This personal story recounts heartbreaking and inspirational experiences as I accompanied my daughter through the dark tunnel of an eating disorder.
It all began with an international adoption in 1983 when our three month old baby completed our family circle. But over the years, normal family dynamics somehow changed and just fourteen years later, in 1997, our precious daughter, Nicole, was dying.
Together with Nicole’s therapist, physician, and my husband, we fought anorexia for over six years. The mission? Rescue Nicole from the jaws of an insidious disease. Through the Tunnel of Love shares the pain, setbacks, struggles and sorrows of dealing with this disorder, as well as how teamwork and the power of unconditional love saved our daughter’s life.
Along with sharing gripping details of our journey, I also provide photos, diary excerpts, and intimate poems. I cover possible causes of anorexia, steps for intervention, helpful insights about the cost of healing, the importance of fathers, and much more.
My memoir is written in an open, vulnerable style with the intent to draw the reader into our story. I believe Through the Tunnel of Love provides insights for anyone struggling to save an anorectic or a self-destructive personality.
