Cliffhangers . . . 9/8/2012 7:59:24 AM
Cliffhangers - Look to Charles Dickens' serial novels, the Harry Potter series, comics, radio, and of course T.V. - keep audiences yearning for more . . . I'm a sucker for cliffhangers of any form: books, movies, or a television series. After all, isn't our life the ultimate cliffhanger? Each new dawn brings us myriad opportunities to alter our life's path; admid the ordinary we face challenges and sorrows, and the chance to make decisions that can influence the world beyond our day-to-day.
Remember Paul Harvey's radio segments with his famous line? ".. . now you're going to hear . . . the rest of the story." And we did.
In times of stress, it's human nature to want to get to "the rest of the story" as quickly as possible. We can't see the big picture from the center of it all. When we want answers and a resolution, that's the toughest time of all.
During our daughter's struggle with an eating disorder, the days, months, and years crawled by, keeping us in the dark most of the time. I kept a diary and when we knew "the rest of the story," I wrote that story. Now I'm re-working a novel that was started a while ago - quite a while ago. Yesterday I had a brain-wave that may catapult me along the path toward completion. And I will make it open-ended so as to leave the reader wanting more. . .
