Slivers 12/5/2010 8:55:10 AM
The Christmas season is approaching and as I prepare our annual letter and reflect on 2010 . . . I see how the highs and the lows have visited us again – like the ocean tides. When our loved one grasped to the last breath of life last May, we knew she would slip away, but that she would be rewarded with a young healthy body, free from pain. I realized, again, that the Lord provided exactly the right comfort at just the right moment; even if it only seemed like a sliver.
There are times when we win by a sliver, avoid an accident by a sliver, grasp to a sliver of hope, or see a sliver of light in the darkest hour. Over Thanksgiving week we travelled over the snow kissed high desert of Central Oregon, the sun was long-past set, but in the western portion of the sky, a sliver of light stretched for miles across the snow-laden mountain tops. A thin horizontal break in clouds held on to the last rudiments of sunlight.
We were driving on dark, icy and treacherous roads and had witnessed the aftermath of a half dozen accidents, one involving a semi-truck that had crossed the center line and crashed into a grove of junipers. My nerves were on edge; but the sliver of light reminded me that the world wasn’t topsy-turvy and that we would be safe.
The trek to our home in Central Oregon took about an hour longer, but like so many times before, we arrived safe and sound. As we drove into the driveway, another sliver of light peeked between the shades, welcoming us home. Sometimes the smallest things make all the difference in the world.
