What was the relevance of the scriptures in Jesus life? If we as Christians are to see the Bible,(scriptures), as the Word of God we must see the relevance of the scriptures in Jesus's life.
What did he think of the scriptures? How did he act toward them? Did he see them as an authority?
The Bible is very clear that Jesus obeyed perfectly the scriptures.
John 12:18 states, "I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me."
Jesus knew he would be betrayed and yet to obey and fulfill the scripture he chose Judas as a disciple. Was this the only time Jesus was obedient to the scripture?
Absolutely not!
In John 17:12, Jesus states, "While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition: that the scripture might be fulfilled."
Again in Matthew 26:52-56, "Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? In the same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are you come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled..."
Time and again Jesus obeyed scripture. It is obvious that he knew the scriptures and obeyed them, but does he expect others to know the scriptures?
Absolutely. When speaking to the Sadducees, Jesus admonished them for being in error, for not knowing the scriptures.
Matthew 22:29, "Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God,..."
He continues in verse 31 by stating, "But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God..."
It is fully evident that Jesus recognized the scriptures as God's words, and he expected God's word to be read.
The only way to keep from error is to read and study God's word.
