Genesis 2:4-7 • Genesis 2:4-7, "These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground,and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
The above verses are amazing. They are a description of the eighth day. Indeed the Lord God created everything in six days and rested on the seventh day, but he did not impart life by the giving of his Holy Spirit until the eighth day. How do we know this? By the other scriptures.
The eighth day is a day of new life. It was on the eighth day that the Lord God breathed into man's nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.
The scriptures are clear that each day of creation is a thousand years. (II Peter 3:8 and Psalms 90:4) If the breath of life were given to Adam on the sixth day he would have lived over 2,000 years. The Bible teaches that Adam lived 930 years. (Genesis 5:5) Life giving water was also given on the eighth day.
The eighth day is significant in the Bible. God made a covenant with Abram, when Abram was 99 to bless Abram and make him a father of many nations. God changed Abram's name to Abraham, a father of many nations, and made an everlasting covenant with him. Abraham's part of the covenant was to circumcise every male child born in his house on the eighth day. Circumcision represented the beginning of a new life and is a foreshadowing of Jesus's resurrection from the dead. (Genesis 17:1-27)
Noah, who was saved from the flood by God is called the eighth person. (II Peter 2:5)
The eighth day is the beginning of a new week. A day when life is imparted. Jesus was resurrected on the first day of the week, or the eighth day. (John 20:1-17, Mark 16:1-13, Matthew 28:1-10)
It was on the first day of the week (8th day) when Jesus breathed on his disciples and said, "receive ye the Holy Ghost." (John 20:19-23)
The sacrifices under the Old Testament show the importance of the eighth day by stating, "...and from the eighth day and thenceforth it shall be accepted for an offering made by fire unto the Lord." (Leviticus 22:27) Thus God is revealing that without the eighth day or resurrection the sacrifice is meaningless.
• Romans 10:9, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
It is amazing how the whole creation points toward the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.
The creation is a true event so also it is an allegory of Christ:
Just as the creation was finished on the sixth day -- so also Jesus stated, "It is finished:" while he was on the cross the sixth day of the week.
Just as the seventh day of creation is a day of rest -- so also Christ's body rested in the grave on the seventh day.
Just as the breath of life was given to man on the eighth day -- so also Christ rose from the dead on the eighth day (or first day of the week).
