Genesis 2:10-14
The Garden • Genesis 2:10-14, "And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates."
The one thing about these verses that strikes me is that the garden of Eden was an actual physical place. It was not some imaginary place, a story place, but it is indeed an actual location on earth.
God takes great care in describing its location.
During the last part of 1974 and the first part of 1975 I worked on an oil drilling rig near Basra, Iraq. Basra is located where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers meet and flow to the Persian Gulf. If my memory serves me correctly, it was explained to me that the Hiddekel River is another name for the Tigris River.
During my time in Iraq, some of my Iraqi co-workers showed me the location of the garden of Eden. They took me to the spot where there were some beautiful palm trees, but it was not what I imagined. But, alas, sin has had its effect on everything on earth.
My visit to he garden of Eden drives home the reality that the Bible is true. Many times while reading the Bible we think in terms of stories instead of actual events that transpired. The Bible can be trusted entirely. God has taken great pains to give us historical evidence of his truthfulness.
