That's What I Think! 1/3/2012 12:08:22 PM
Good afternoon!
Hey I just got my hair done! I have had to find a new salon and hair professional in my new city. I was worried this might conjur up my old anxiety issues. In the past I was unable to go into a salon. I found sitting in the chair confining. And I found it took too long to get my hair done...that I wanted to just get out of the building! I would breathe too fast, try to gulp that deep breath to feel better and never could. This just escalated the panic symptoms and I got worse. So today I was wondering how I would do.
I had been seeing a good friend in her home for my hair and felt immeasureably better and calm while under her tutelage.
But its a new world now and I had to go back to a salon environment. Whoo Boy!
During the drive into town I could tell I was experiencing a small bit of panic and I thought "Oh no". I keep going and arrived at the salon. When I got in the door my gal greeted me and she was happy and nice. This turned out to be okay for me. I did not succumb to the panic I felt. What I did was tell myself, this is just a building and it is just someone new doing my hair. I relaxed into the process taking one step at a time. I breathed slowly on purpose and let myself know that if I felt I needed to get up; I would just do so. And not feel bad or embarassed about it. It is always a good tool to excuse yourself to the bathroom, even though you don't have to go...in order to sit for a moment and reflect on what is happening. Take as long as you want. Come out when you feel better.
Sounds corny but its a safe haven. Sometimes we need that and that is okay.
I was happy that my appointment went without incident. I hope you too can get to this point. In the mean time, just breathe and don't be hard on yourself.
