Were The Gospels Faked? Oh, come on! 7/27/2008 3:30:04 PM
WOW! A family claims it "made-up" the Gospels and their characters. Okay, so I have a friend who was raised a Christian (actually, she was raised a Southern Baptist just like I was). Both of us had a pretty sheltered childhood. We grew up in a small Southern fishing village on the coast in the 50's. Out lives were shaped by a place where everyone knew everyone else and all about their business. The Southern Baptists mingled with the Methodists, tolerated the Presbyterians and Episcopalians, looked down their noses at the Apostolics, totally discounted the Mormons and thought the Roman Catholics were going to Hell in a handbasket.
Once we left high school in our little Mayberry-like town and moved out into the world where we were exposed to other ways of thinking we started to question our values and up-bringing and pursued answers about religions of the world. I still rebel a little by writing my controversial fiction serier and my friend rebelle by marrying a Jew and converting.
So, what in the world does this have to do with Jesus, you might be asking. Well, probably not a lot; I admit. While visitng with my friend and her husband he happened to mention that I could incorporate the theories about Piso into my writings. I had no idea who he was talking about and he tried to explain that it was basically a Jewish thing. An old story about a Roman family who supposedly FAKED the Gospels and de up all the characters in them. OOPS! Of course, the gauntlet was thrown down and I had to pick it up. I did some research and found that this story has been around for awhile in various shades and colors. There is a website on the net about a man whose family name was PISO. On this site is the info about his family supposedly making up the whole thing to make Rome "look better" in the eyes of the rest of the world. Holy Cow! Well, anyway. More research has found even more stories that get even wilder. But, then I got to thinking, what do we REALLY know about the Gospels and who wrote them? Not a lot, I can tell you. What we do know only goes back so far and there isn't a lot of solid evidence to back it up. And the stories in the Gospels are something else that are hard to back up with actual physical proof. Doesn't it seem likely that there should be something somewhere more than just conjecture and myth? Can it be true that a mere mortal wrote the Gospels and made up the stories that later became the greatest religion on earth? Well, it is something to think about and to pursue. Iam doing lots of research now and things are just getting more and more confusing. You see, it used to be that research had to be done from books. Now we use the internet too. How can we tell the difference between something stating a true fact and something fostering a "story". It isn't easy,I can tell you that. But I am still trying. Ancora Imparo: I am still learning.
