The care and feeding of the second book in a series 5/22/2009 2:35:01 PM
How I finally finished the second book in the series.It isn't as easy as you think if your characters won't cooperate. Okay so it is 22 May,2009. Lord have mercy. I just realized that 44 years ago today I graduated from high schoo. My Lord I am old. Where did the time go? But that is off the subject. My second book in the Magdalene Chronicles Series is completed and off to the publisher today. Thank goodness. I thought I would never finish it. You know, it isn't all that easy to write a book; much less the second in a series. First, you have to have a plan. Ha! Plan! That's a joke. All my plans went out the window once I started writing. You see, my characters just wouldn't cooperate worth a damn. I would plan to write about one thing and find myself going off on a tangent I hadn't even considered. I don't know who said that writers go by an outline but it has never worked for me. Those people battle it out in my head and just plain do what they want to do. Who can blame them? After all, it IS their story.
This time I thought to keep my characters more grounded and less globe trotting. That didn't work. Before I could even say "boo" they were off in a drafty monastery in Jerusalem, into the stifling heat of Qumaran, battling giant spiders in the caves, being abducted by blue skinned Turaegs, and finding out the true meaning of the Holy Grail. By the time I got to write "finis" I was exhausted. I am looking forward to a little rest and relaxation before I start on book three.
Did the Book Convention last month help me any? I am not certain. I had a lot of interest in the series but most of the agents seemed to think it was unsalable. I wonder what Kathlees McGowan or Dan Brown would say to that. I haven't given up and still strive to get the stories out there. If for nothing else but to shut up the voices in my head that keep the story going round and round.
