My Grandson and Me 7/10/2010 3:39:04 PM
all about this summer of age 5. I am learning everyday that children are born with a computer in their heads. My grandson will be five in just two weeks. He has been going to school since he was 2. When did they start sending kids to school at such a young age? I must have missed the instruction booklet when it was passed around.
Nothing today is like it was when I was a single mother 35 years ago. I hated the thought of taking my son to day care because I had to work. I was glad that he was learning things there but I considered 5 and kindergarden early enough to start school. Of course, then children were born and didn't even really open their eyes and focus for a few days. My grandson came into the world 5 years ago a month early and with his eyes wide open. Because we had all talked to him (inside his mother's belly) since we discovered he was on his way, he seemed to be aware of who we all were. My son took him from the delivery nurse and said "Hello there, I'm the one who read you The Cat in the Hat." My grandson curled his hand around his daddy's finger and love was in the air.
If love were all that was needed to raise a child, this one would make it to adulthood with no problems. I have never felt this sort of totally unreserved love in my life. Sometimes it even seems obsessive. it is wonderful, though, to see him waiting on the front porch for me to drive up into the driveway after I have been gone for a month or more.
He has a sense of humor that just won't stop. His newest thing is to say something outrageous and then, when you are looking at him like he has three heads, he says "April Fool's". How did he learn about April Fool's jokes before he is 5?
His mother thinks he has delusions of grandeur. He says he is the King of our Kingdom...but he calls me "Highness:. We have no idea where he came up with that. He will say "Highness, can you hand me the crayons?" What 5 year old thinks about royalty? Maybe it's because I used to call him when he was just 1 or 2 and pretend to be the Queen....but, then, if that is true how does he remember it?
He remembers everything. When he was just learning to walk I fell in the garage (trying to walk to fast in my flip flops) and was badly injured. The rescue squad had to come and get me. It petrified him. This year he heard me and his mother talking about my brittle bones and he piped up and said "MeMe, it's a good thing your bones weren't bad when I was little and you fell in the garage. I don't want you to break." He has been very careful with me all summer.
I hope that I can remember everything he does until he is grown. His mother writes down all the funny things he says and does. Someday we need to transcribe them into books.
Every day I laugh. Every day I am amazed. Every day I learn something new from the light of my life. Grandsons (grandchildren in general) are God's gift to us for all the struggles we had to go through raising their parents.
