Real Writing or Acting? 4/6/2009 1:51:30 PM
Just a thought that crossed my mind as I viewed a review of my poems, do we as writers write what we are not, and so become "actors/actresses" in this craft? My writings reflect who I am as a person, and maybe to a fault. Some think is is a lack of humanness on my part, being so vulnerable and bare to those who read. Most of those who read what I wrote have said it touched them because they feel that same human feelings and thoughts in the written work, and that is what gave them impact. The truth in a writer's work will always reach out to the reader because that is the essence of writing. I cannot imagine myself writing what I am not - thus "acting" in my writing.
I write about pain, failures, death, hopes, faith, values, love, and issues because I think this is what humanity is all about. If I had knowledge of Guantanamo Bay, I'd write about that abuse too, and if I had knowledge of Wall Street goings on - you will surely read it in my work.
The point is, one can only write about life from one's experience. Not from a view wearing a mask and acting out what one has no knowledge or perception of.
