December days are full of surprises. The other morning, as the December sun warmed the crisp, cold air, tiny diamonds sparkled and winked at me just outside my kitchen window. At first glance it looked like falling snow, but then I realized it was ice crystals rapidly evaporating from the needles of our pine trees. With teacup in hand I watched hundreds of fairy-like particles float about in the bright sunlight, suspend for a minute or more, and then land softly on the ground or vanish as if by magic.
Meanwhile, a score of tiny black and brown birds hopped about the flowerbeds as they hunted through the bounty of seeds generously provided by the towering pines. And just above their bobbing heads and busy feet, silver flakes of glitter danced in the sun-filled, but frigid sky.
This phenomenon continued for the better part of an hour, or so it seemed. I couldn't pass up the opportunity and so I sat at the kitchen table and enjoyed the show. Occasions like this stick with me and I can't resist the impulse to record it. Even at this busy time of year, I look forward to the simple, yet memorable feats that nature has to offer. What's next on the agenda? After all winter is just around the corner.
